finding green

In London last week, Janet spent time finding green – exploring community gardens, parks, and places where people are reclaiming the city and making space for nature. Her photo essay begins on Monday with a cup of tea in the Onion Garden

Followed by damsel-and-dragonfly-spotting during a wander round the new gardens at the Natural History Museum:

On Tuesday she went to Kew Gardens in the rain, mostly to walk in the treetops, but also to peek in the hothouses and check out the veg patch…

Wednesday started with a visit to the Phoenix Garden in the West End and close encounters with wrens, robins and blackbirds:

Followed by Walworth Garden:

On the way back to the tube station, she photographed this shady street planting:

The last visit of the day was to the always-inspiring Chelsea Physic Garden:

On the walk back there were plenty more examples of on-street planting:

On Thursday she checked out the view from Primrose Hill…

Then walked along the canal…

…to Camley Street Natural Park, which has a floating observatory on the canal with a coot’s nest right next to it:

Camley Street also has well-established SUDs/rainwater collection gardens on the street outside:

On Friday she visited the fabulous Breaker’s Yard Garden at Sutton House:

Finally, on Saturday, she looked – from a distance – at the eye-catchingly colourful garden on Acton Town underground station:

Apart from the tube travel, entrance to Chelsea Physic Garden (£13) and Kew (£20) it was a pretty low cost way to see some bits of the capital that might not ordinarily be top of the list to visit. The visits did also clock up almost 117,000 steps (or 50 miles) across the week!
